Moving I-4 Forward: October Program Update

Moving I-4 Forward to Bring Improvements for Evacuation Routes

The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) priority is safety and improving mobility on area roadways. During a State of Emergency or evacuation please follow orders from State and local officials.

Earlier this month, Hurricane Milton brought additional attention to the Interstate 4 (I-4) corridor due to the path the storm took. As FDOT works to bring congestion relief to this important section of I-4, project staff are designing improvements to aid in emergency situations.

  • The Accelerated Start project will begin with the creation of congestion relief lanes that will improve efficiency in daily commutes as well as emergency situations such as evacuations.

  • Additional lanes to be built during construction of other Moving I-4 Forward projects will allow for ease of travel during normal road use and will aid evacuation. At the completion of the Moving I-4 Forward Program, this stretch of I-4 will have 12 lanes in total – four general use lanes in both directions and two express lanes in both directions. This will cover 14 miles of I-4 from U.S. 27 to State Road (S.R.) 536. Adding this capacity will create more efficient evacuation during times of emergency.

ICYMI: Teams Selected for Accelerated Start Project

On October 3, 2024, FDOT selected three teams for the Accelerated Start project. These three teams are working collaboratively with FDOT to complete the final design of the Accelerated Start project using the brand new Modified Phased Design Build (MPDB) contracting method. Developed to foster innovation and collaboration, MPDB expedites traditional transportation planning and building processes, delivering results faster. By leveraging this innovative approach, the Moving I-4 Forward team will be able to provide congestion relief for travelers on this section of I-4 by the end of 2025!

On a Mission: Team Member Spotlight
