Improving I-4 in Polk, Osceola and Orange Counties

The Interstate 4 (I-4) corridor in Central Florida is a key connection for thousands of motorists who live and work in the area as well as tourists traveling to nearby destinations. To help motorists get around quicker and safer, FDOT is planning a series of projects called Moving I-4 Forward to improve I-4 from west of U.S. 27 to east of State Road (S.R.) 536. These projects will extend the work that was completed as part of the I-4 Ultimate Improvement Project in Orlando and Beyond the Ultimate projects that added two new express lanes, one in each direction.

Through the Modified Phased Design-Build contracting process, the Accelerated Start project will be completed quickly, further expediting the delivery of the Moving I-4 Forward Program and allowing other projects within the program to be constructed. This unprecedented and innovative method will allow for multiple teams to collaborate on the design and expedite construction to bring congestion relief sooner than traditional build methods.

Upon completion of the Moving I-4 Forward work, motorists will notice several improvements along this 14-mile stretch of highway:
Project Details
  • By widening I-4 from six lanes to 10 lanes, FDOT will provide much-needed congestion relief.
  • Two of the lanes will be managed express lanes, offering an option for motorists wishing to travel longer distances in the area. These dedicated lanes will be separated from the general traffic by barriers.
  • Intersection improvements – including upgrades and redesign – are planned for four interchanges:
    • I-4 and U.S. 192
    • I-4 and S.R. 429
    • I-4 and U.S. 27
    • I-4 and Osceola Parkway
  • These projects will increase access to local roads and provide better connected highways.
  • Each interchange project will also improve efficiency and safety.
  • Starting in 2025, motorists will experience immediate congestion relief when a pair of new general-purpose lanes opens to traffic under the Accelerated Start project. The new lanes will be built in the median of I-4 and will be finished by the end of 2025. This will bring immediate congestion relief at the start of the Moving I-4 Forward Program instead of waiting until the program is complete. The projects will also include wider shoulders for emergency evacuations and reworked interchanges that will reduce backups along ramps to provide safer driving conditions.

The Moving I-4 Forward Program will consist of five main projects plus an initial phase called the Accelerated Start that includes two additional components to jump-start future construction.
