Initial Phase of Accelerated Start Project to Open

Moving I-4 Forward’s Accelerated Start Project prioritized construction of new congestion relief lanes – one general use lane in each direction – along Interstate 4 (I-4). These additional lanes will provide enhanced regional connectivity by improving travel times along I-4.

Having these additional lanes will increase vehicle capacity to improve traffic flow, allowing drivers to get to their destination safer and faster. Congestion relief also means more reliable trips.

This work was anticipated for completion at the end of 2025, but now will be complete eight months AHEAD OF SCHEDULE.

One additional lane in each direction will be open to traffic the week of April 28, 2025.

Addressing the Growth

Building a better I-4 for the future

As Florida continues to experience rapid growth, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is actively addressing the state’s evolving infrastructure needs. Through the Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative, FDOT is accelerating a series of projects in Central Florida to add two new Express Lanes in each direction along Interstate 4 (I-4) from west of U.S. 27 in Polk County to east of World Center Drive, State Road (S.R.) 536 in Orange County.

Known as the “Moving I-4 Forward,” these projects will deliver much-needed congestion relief 10 to 20 years ahead of the original schedule, made possible by the bold vision of Governor Ron DeSantis and the support of the Florida Legislature.

  • Improve travel times by reducing congestion.
  • Increase safety and connectivity.
  • Enhance the quality of life for the community.
  • Strengthen resilient infrastructure for future growth.
Will N. Watts, Jr., P.E.
Assistant Secretary of Engineering and Operations

“Thanks to Governor DeSantis’ leadership and forward-thinking approach, we were empowered to look at even more ways to expedite these critical infrastructure improvements. Moving Florida Forward was already poised to benefit Floridians, and with the re-sequencing of the delivery for these auxiliary lanes, drivers will start to see relief by the end of 2025 at one of the most congested areas in the state.”
